Yesterday…
When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, we were all taught to save up money for the future. Save up then you get to buy something big, like a car, a home, and so on.
And when that pesky insurance agent whom we thought was our friend came a-calling, we did everything we could to duck out the back door. What, with his asking us to put out money we didn’t have for some hare-brained scheme we couldn’t trust, we couldn’t get away fast enough!
And, a friend whispers, did you know that he gets to keep half, yes, half! of the money you pay every month! Imagine that!
What a racket!
So it came about that we had to tell our insurance agent friends not to talk about insurance if we were to remain friends.
Insurance as a concept? We didn’t get it!
Fast forward to today…
Guess who lives on the big house over yonder hill and has lived there since about 20 years ago? Many of these pesky insurance guys are living in homes and driving cars beyond our own financial reach.
And those guys didn’t even make it to university for goodness’ sake!
And when I want insurance today? Those guys don’t come a-calling like they used to. I need to pick up the phone and call them!
Yes, we still have insurance agents calling on us, but they are now different. Most of them made university or college and they are now studied, examinationed, certificated and licenced into people we now call personal financial advisers. And the products they sell, yes, some of it is still insurance, but they need not persuade us any more – they just tell us how much we pay and how much we get.
Do you think insurance is a good line to be in now? It must be, because you now have to study and sit exams before they’ll give you the job.
Insurance as a concept? We get it!
Network marketing…
Today, who do you still avoid like the plague? Might it be that friend of yours who is still trying to get you into direct selling, MLM, network marketing? Are you ducking out the back door when he comes a-calling?
Do you wonder what indecent commission he’s going to make out of your hard-earned money? Your friend tells you, it’s all a pyramid thing, the guys on top get all the money out of the suckers below, don’t you be a sucker.
What a racket!
And they ought to know better! They’ve all been to university, for goodness’ sake!
Think again…
Maybe, just maybe, network marketing might just be the next profession.
The world today is not the same as yesterday and is different even before tomorrow comes. The things we used to rely on – governments, banks, corporations, jobs and professions – are no longer what they used to be. Giant edifices we grew up with, huge cultural symbols we thought would never change have tumbled.
And we’re now in a completely new economy. Surely you don’t still think savings alone will get you rich? Even investments can’t even keep up with rising prices and inflation, never mind savings at the paltry rates the banks pay nowadays. And do you still think that working hard at a job will give you security?
Today, being safe is the new risky!
So, think again. Maybe, just maybe, that network marketing friend of yours may have a door into the future – just like the insurance people of old.
Network marketing as a concept?
When do you think you’ll get it?

What about yesterday’s profession is today’s racket?
Or, should I write, yesterday’s professionS are today’s racketS?
Yes, many of yesterday’s professions become today’s rackets. In fact, far too many, if not all.
Time was when honour, ethics and integrity ruled the professions. Not now. No one knows the meaning of those words.
Anyone agree, disagree?
